Dear Reader,
Social networking as an emerging media in India is just the tip of the proverbial iceberg of possibilities. From daily chit-chats to business updates, it is enjoying an unprecedented impact in many aspects of our lives. The number of Facebook users in India has more than doubled in the past year largely due to Facebook's concentration on mobile phone applications, and it is now available in six Indian languages – Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. India is the second largest country by sheer number of Orkut users with Bengaluru as its blogging capital.
Top celebrities and politicians alike are embracing Twitter and Facebook as a way of engaging with their fans giving them access to details of their lives that would never have been shared before and creating a level of engagement that is novel and exciting. Networks are also being used with success for raising awareness of causes from "Save the Tiger" to gathering support for the national hockey team.
Now is the time when the Indian corporate community should take advantage of the emergence of social media. It has the potential to make use of a powerful existing resource – its employees' use of social media. It is now everywhere and set to snowball in India in the next few months. Linkedin, among the world's fastest growing networking sites, is focusing on India to make the country its second largest user base.
What will this mean for India, and how can we harness the tremendous potential? |
